The Heart of Ndhiwa Sub-county

The Linda Moore Community Center is located in the beautiful yet challenging landscape of Ndhiwa Sub-county. Our community is rich in culture and resilience, but faces significant hurdles common in many rural areas of emerging economies. We are committed to working with the people of Ndhiwa and Homabay to address these realities and unlock their incredible potential.

The Challenges

Our community faces significant hurdles that we are committed to addressing together.

The Hope

Through collaboration, we're building a brighter future together.

Validated Needs in Our Community

Our work is directly informed by the specific needs and problems we see and have validated within Ndhiwa:

Education

  • Low Literacy Rates

Low literacy rates persist among adults, youth, and even children, limiting opportunities for personal and economic advancement.

  • Limited Learning Resources

Access to quality learning resources is often scarce.

  • Girls Especially Affected

Girls are especially affected, as teenage pregnancy and early marriage rates remain high (double the national average).

Health & Well-being

  • Limited Health Information

Limited access to essential health information on lifestyle, nutrition, and preventative care.

  • Under-resourced Facilities

Few health facilities are adequately resourced to meet the complex needs of the population.

  • Lack of Home Remedies Knowledge

Lack of knowledge regarding simple, effective home remedies that can support family health.

Significant Health Challenges:

HIV/AIDS

Rate: 25%

Ndhiwa Sub-county faces an alarming HIV prevalence rate of 25%-meaning one in four individuals is affected. This is part of a regional crisis where prevalence is more than double the national rate.

Malaria

Children under 5: 60% | Population: 19%

The area is a high-malaria zone. Ndhiwa has one of the highest rates in the country, affecting over 60% of children under 5 and a population prevalence rate of 19%.

Economic Activities

  • Limited Economic Diversification

Limited diversification of economic activities, with heavy reliance on rain-fed farming.

  • Climate Change Impact

Climate change impacts have led to increasingly erratic rain patterns, threatening agricultural livelihoods.

  • Limited Training Opportunities

Limited information and training on viable alternative or supplementary economic opportunities.

Family & Social Dynamics

  • Family Values Challenges

Challenges to strong family values are observed, including a high proportion of families that still practice polygamy, even among younger individuals.

  • Complex Social Issues

Complex social issues like spouse sharing are observed, often exacerbated by the high number of widows in the area.

  • Isolation from Modern Services

The influence of certain groups promoting isolation from modern technology, formal schooling, or essential services can hinder community development and well-being.

Our Response: A Hub for Transformation

These challenges are significant, but they fuel our determination. The Linda Moore Community Center is designed to be a catalyst for positive change, offering targeted programs and support that directly address these validated needs. We believe that by working together, empowered by knowledge and resources, the people of Ndhiwa and Homabay can overcome these obstacles and build a future filled with hope and prosperity.
